キリスト教社会の仏教
新年明けましておめでとうございます。
旧年中は大変お世話になりました。どうぞ今年もよろしくお願い致します。
昨年のクリスマスの日には、カトリック教会の深夜のミサに参加する頂く機会がありました。
イエスキリストの誕生を祝う大切な日ということで、教会は人で埋め尽くされ、仏教の釈尊の降誕会のようでした。
その後、仏教会ではお餅つきと除夜の鐘が年末にあり、お正月の三が日には御祈祷をしました。
日本では神仏習合といって、神社の行事と仏教寺院の行事がいっしょに生活に溶け込んでいます。
ここアメリカではどうでしょう。ここではキリスト教がアメリカ人の国民性や文化と切っても切れない深い関係にあるように感じます。
私自身もカトリックの大学で学んでいた頃、キリスト教を礎とする大きな文化圏の中で仏教が果たせる役割を真剣に考えたことがありました。
クリスチャンのご家族やご友人との関係を通して、皆様も同じような考えをもたれたことがあるのではないでしょうか。
私自身は、キリスト教も仏教も熟知しているわけではありませんが、個人的な経験を通して知ったことがあります。
それは、キリスト教は、信仰や人間愛を通して、私たちの誠意や良心といったものに働きかけるものであるのに対し、仏教は、人を隔てない「壁」のない心と命のあり方を示してくれるものであるように思います。
かつて、禅寺の僧侶の下で修行をしたというエレイン・マキネスというカトリックの修道女がいました。彼女が修行をすることになった経緯はここでは省きますが、その修道女を指導した僧侶は、「何もお前さんに仏教徒になれといっているのではない。ただ、より素晴らしいクリスチャンになって欲しいだけだ。」と、よくこう話したそうです。
事実、彼女は、その後、仏教の修行を経てカトリックの修道院に戻ったとき、キリスト教の信仰の道がより深く広いものになったと言っています。
仏教とは、ミャンマー、スリランカ、アフガニスタン、チベット、タイ、ベトナム、中国、韓国、日本とアジア諸国の文化圏の中で水のように溶け込み、そこにある文化や土着の宗教と共に人々の生活を潤してきた特殊な宗教であると言えます。
現在、フランスやドイツ、スイス、そしてここアメリカでも仏教は小さな湧水のようにそれぞれの国の文化を潤しています。
仏教は、真実は「今とここ」にあるという言い方をします。過去や未来は私たちが頭の中で作り上げているものに過ぎないと。
私たちが、アメリカのキリスト教社会のなかで 仏教徒としてこうするべきだといった教えはどこにもありません。
今ある真実に眼を開き、そこで大切だと思うことを精一杯にすることが、仏教徒として生きることに他なりません。
アメリカのキリスト教文化の中で暮らし続ける仏教徒は、仏教の意味を改めて考える機会が毎日の生活の中であるように思います。
どのような国や社会にあっても、周りの人々や生活習慣を大切にして生きて頂くことが肝要なのではないかと思います。どうぞご家族ご友人を大切になさってください。
皆様にとって、平成二十七年が、素晴らしい年となりますことを心よりお祈り申し上げます。

Buddhism in a Christian Society
Happy New year to all the members and friends!
How were your Christmas and New Year holidays?
I hope you had a wonderful time with your families and friends.
On Christmas, I attended the midnight mass at St. Lucy Catholic Church across the street to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Just like the birth of Buddha in April, many people were there to celebrate this special day.
Following Christmas, we held a Mochi making event and year-end bell ringing service. Then, on the New Year day, we had a wish-making Gokito service and prayed to the deities following Shinto tradition.
In Japan, we have a word called Shinbutsu Shugo meaning “Combined culture of Shinto and Buddhism.” In the case of the United States, Christianity is deeply and widely embedded in our traditions and cultures.
While I was still a student at a Catholic college, there were days I made effort to figure out the role of Buddhism in Christian way of life. I wonder if you have thought about the same thing through your life with your families and friends who are Christians.
Although my knowledge of both religions may be limited and biased, my personal experience taught me how Christianity strengthens the faith in humanity and the sincerity of individuals. On the other hand, Buddhism always showed me a sense of direction to reach a place where I can find the peaceful mind which has no walls of bias or discrimination in an effort to transcend the blind nature of human beings.
Once, there was a Canadian Catholic nun, Sister Elaine MacInnes, who took a Buddhist training in the temple in Kyoto, Japan. Her teacher always said to her, “I am not converting you into a different religion. I just want you to be a better Christian.”
She later went back to her monastery and realized how it opened up her path as a Christian deepening her faith and wisdom.
History of Buddhism shows how it has interpenetrated various cultural spheres across Asia as it traveled through India, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Tibet, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, China, Taiwan, Korea and Japan. Buddhism always had a unique nature to merge with the indigenous religions and religious cultures in these Asian countries taking roots in the heart of the people who worship their religions.
Today, Buddhism has been taking root in the Western world including France, Germany, Canada and United States like drops of water slowly moistening the land.
Buddhists say the truth is “here and now.” When you truly open your eyes in the mind, your mind responds to the truth, and actions arise accordingly. Such actions are surely that of a Buddhist, no matter what they are.
This year, Long Beach Buddhist Church will continue to expand the church activities with regular service, meditation, Sunday school, casino tours, and karaoke. I look forward to your visit to Long Beach Buddhist Church.

明けましておめでとうございます。
昨年一年間は、カナダ、オンタリオ州の田舎町ハンツビルからアメリカ、カリフォルニアのロングビーチへ移り少しずつ生活環境や仕事の環境を整える一年間でした。
今年は、他の組織と少しずつ新しい関係を築き、そこから元メンバーの方や新しいメンバーの方たちが仏教会に来てくださる機会をつくっていくことが目標です。
日系人の日本語学校での講師としても、ボランティアで仕事をさせて頂けることになました。
北米のZen Centerとしての活動と超宗派寺院としての活動。これは昨年に引き続き、いろいろな工夫をしながら進めていきます。
日本語学校に関わる語学、日系コミュニティーとの交流、インターフェイス（キリスト教教会や団体を交えた）、その他ロングビーチやＬＡのリトル東京などの団体とのかかわりを少しずつ深めていきたいところです。
幸い、ロングビーチでの生活のリズムはとてもスローペースなので、家族との時間をしっかり持ちながら、落ち着いて楽しくやっていこうと思います。
日本とのつながりも、いつか作っていければ良いのですが、そちらはなかなかアイデアが浮かびません。
今はこうして活動の状況をたまに書き込むぐらいでしょうか・・・。
