Photos from Long Beach Buddhist Church Obon Summer Festival on July 13th
Long Beach Buddhist Church had its 3rd Obon Summer Festival with the traditional Urabon-e, Seijiki-e, Manto-e and Hatsubon-e service with Devin Seigaku Amato and Chri Tosei Storms, Songs by Andrea Yamamoto, Ryujin Taiko by Robie, Steve and Cayli La and Kokoro Taiko by Victor Fukuhara, Joanne Matsunaga, Darren Yomogida, Katrina Shibata, Mike LePage, Ken Sumida, etc. and MC by David Yamamoto. The Bon Odori dance was dedicated by many dancers including the Terminal Islanders led by the Ondo teacher June Donovan.






Special thanks to Nancy and Brian Kobata and Wanda Higaki for the delicious Okinawa Dango, to Keiko Moriwaki for helping us with the vintage sale, to Robert, Yuri, Miya and Aya Yasumura, Donna Matoi, Darren Yomogida, Paul Sumida and Victor Fukuhara for helping us prepare for and clean up after the event and the service throughout the week.

Photos from Montebello Sozenji Buddhist Temple Obon Community Festival July 21st
Sozenji Buddhis Temple had its annual Obon community festival on July 21st. After the passing of Rev. Shuichi Tom Kurai in 2018, this was the second Obon Community Festival. Thanks to the Sozenji boad, David Isobe, Emi Razo, Judy Fujii, Shirley Asao, Steve Hamano, Beverly Murata, and Eric Solorio and their children, the members of Taiko Center of Los Angeles led by Maceo Hernandez, Claremont Taiko Group led by Denise Donovan, the Samisen player, Mike Penny, preschool Kodomo no ie, Aikido Academy, Matsutoyo Kai, and Hanaygi Rokufukumi and Bando Hidesomi.





The Urabon-e, Sejiki-e, Manto-e, Hatsubon-e and July Shotuski service were conducted with the help of Rev. Dokan Kojima, Howard Shogaku Miyoshi, Jyo-zen Anju, Luke Shuraku Stuard, Devin Seigaku Amato, Chris Tosei Storms as well as Louis Shuko Laudermilk and Tim Tetsudo Langdell.

Nisei Week Parade (Aug 11) Ondo Practice at LBBC
Keiko Shibata and Sally Mori have been sharing the Odori for the Nisei week parade in August.



Goeika Teacher Rev. Kuga teaches at LBBC and Zenshuji Temple on June 17th
Rev. Kuga who is from an affiliated temple of Daiunji temple Rev. Osada served as an abbot came to LBBC in June.
He shared with us the tradition of Goeika, Buddhist hymns.

Frank Ramos and Japanese Cultural Center Festival
Frank Ramos set up the booth on behalf of Long Beach Buddhist Church at the Long Beach Japanese Cultural Center Summer Festival.

Regular Zazen practice starts in September.


August Shushin Peterson
Shushin has moved to a new town with his family to start a new stage of his life as a chaplain. He will continue his practice with Tosei's dharma-friend Chigen until he is ready for the Dharma combat ceremony.


LBBC 63rd Anniversary November 10th
Long Beach Buddhist Church will have its annual Anniversary celebration in November. We are hoping to bring back the tradition of cultural sharing by inviting performers and singers and their friends.

The Year 2022 100th Anniversary of Soto Zen Mission in North America and Zenshuji Soto Mission & 50th Anniversary of Montebello Sozenji Buddhist Temple

In 2022, Soto Zen Buddhism will mark the 100th anniversary. It also means the 100th anniversary of Zenshuji Soto Mission and the 50th Anniversary of Sozenji Buddhist Temple. Soto shu will have a Dai-Jukai-e ceremony to give precepts and Buddhist titles to the householders to encourage their Buddhist practice. Members of LBBC and Sozenji are can also participate in this week-long Jukai-e ceremony.
